WHO WE ARE
Emergency Services of Barron County is a non-profit group of volunteers that respond to emergencies throughout the community; such as heart attacks, strokes, breathing problems, seizures, car accidents, etc. Specifically trained as Emergency Medical Responders "also known as First Responders", these men and women are dispatched by the Barron County 911 Center and respond from home or work to help those within their community experiencing an emergency.

This dedicated group of responders are not firefighters, paramedics, or police officers.
They are a specialized group of medically trained responders that supplement local emergency resources. Typically arriving onscene before the ambulance, these responders initiate patient care following state medical/trauma protocols. Our responders then transition patient care to the arriving ambulance and further assist by providing extra manpower.

Pat Mattmiller's Story

On March 24th 2016, my wife and I were enjoying a drive on County Hwy P, one mile south of Almena, when I suffered a medical condition causing my vehicle to drive off the road into a ditch. My wife quickly waved down a passing motorist, Brent Thill, who happened to be First Responder.
Brent rushed to my side, found that I was unconscious and without a pulse. Brent immediately started CPR and was soon assisted by other First Responders, in addition to officers from the Barron County Sheriff’s Department and the Turtle Lake Police Department. A few moments later, Gold Cross Ambulance arrived with an AED, and my heart was started again. I was quickly loaded into an awaiting helicopter and was flown to Eau Claire.
We lose sight of how fragile life actually is, and how quickly it can be lost. A year later, I am now living a full life with excellent heart performance and no additional health concerns. As I look back on that terrifying day, I am very grateful for the first responders and police officers that came to my rescue. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be here to share my story with you.
I encourage every community to support their local first responder organization. Not only are these incredible men and women highly trained; they’re also our friends, our family, and our neighbors – and they’re there when we need them the most…
